Question on high mileage Suburban

Guy trying to sell me a Suburban (I'll get back later w/ specs). It's a 90's with 219k and he's asking $1,000 (say's regular maitenence has been done). It's missing the back seat.

Body is in good condition and had a new paint job about 5 years ago the paint is okay.

What do you think?

Re: Question on high mileage Suburban

Check for leaks, find out when major engine and tranny components have been serviced.

Personally I think that a $1000 car is a gamble no matter how you look at it. Its cheap, it could run for years with minimal problems, or it could break down on your way home after buying it. Luck of the draw. But if thats what you want to spend, I would just make sure it has no major leaks and I wouldnt take it out of town. Good luck.

Sounds like it could be a steal....

Here's how I always look at from my personal viewpoint...

1. Is it a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th vehicle.
2. How much does it cost to put a new engine/tranny in it?
3. Can you, or are you willing to, work on it?

If 1 & 3 are yes and the cost of the vehicle plus the engine and tranny is cheaper than what you can get a vehicle with less mileage on it then go for it. $1000 vehicles are tough to come by in decent shape...I'd jump on it personally.

Also, remember while 200 k's in mileage increases the chance for you to have a problem there is not guarantee that a vehicle with less mileage will have any less problems. They are pieces of machinery and machines break for a variety of reasons at a variety of times.

By the way, I drove my $400 truck (after rebuilding engine and some other things (2k in truck)) several times on a 1,200 mile roundtrip with no problems sans a flat tire.

If you did not buy it and he still has it put me in touch. That is for darn sure a duplicate of my baby and the wife could use one. If nothing else I got me a parts truck.
