Windstar Engine & Tranny replacement

Does any one know if a 1995 windstar 3.8 engine and tranny will replace a 1995 3.0 engine and tranny. If so - any modifications needed? Thanks

Hello

Why do you want to put in a 3.8? What's wrong with the 3.0? I'm not sure, but I would think that possible a change in motor mounts and/or sub frame. I would hope that this van is in very good shape to want to go to this much work. I've been thinking about looking for a van with the 3.0. I don't hear of any head gasket problems with this motor.

Regards

Dan

Have no idea what I was thinking. Should have checked before asking this question. It is actually a 3.8 in the van now. It's rapping real bad even in neutral and park (illiminates tranny). It doesn't sound like a push rod so that leaves the connecting rods or something internal I guess. The van is in good shape and runs excellant other then the rap. No leaks what so ever, Thanks for replying

When I did my headgaskets on my 95 3.8 I also put in rod bearings. I heard a little noise on start up. The noise would go away when the oil psi built up. When I looked at the bearings, I could see copper on all of them, however, #6 there was much more copper showing. I believe this was the rod that was making the noise on start up.

How many miles do you have on your van? I changed the bearings around 175,000. I would think that if it's making noise all of the time that the rod, crank are in bad shape. One would only know if they pulled the pan and took a look.

Regards

Dan

Re: Windstar Engine & Tranny replacement

I have 169000 on the engine. I spoke with a garage today he had 3 other windstars there with the same problem (alltho I didn't have the van with me - I explained it to him). He gets them all the time. He said it is the grankshaft bearing. Fix for $900.00. So you figure if I drop the oil pan I should see shavings?

Yes if it's making noise all of the time... yes, sorry to say, there will be metal in the bottom of the oil pan. If you have the time, the space you could get another engine from the bone yard and put it in yourself.
