Re: Upgrade my '82!
was it swapped for fuel injected? you cant put a chip on a carburated vehicle..
As far as performance goes, aftermarket for the 2.8 is slim to nill.. and there arent really any bolt-on's that'l give you noticeable power gains.. dual exhaust is a waste of money, especially on a 2.8.. Get a single 2 1/2 inch exhaust and a decent air filter.. A good tune up and carb adjust made the most difference on the 2.8's ive owned

..I was about to say that 2.8s are FI, but.. seeing as its an 82, yeah.. I agree with what he said. Dual exhaust is too much trouble.

Re: Re: Upgrade my '82!
Alright, not to argue at all. But I recently put some pacesetter headers and borla catback on my 3.4 (which is nearly identical to the 2.8's, just bored and stroked basically). And there were most definately huge performance gains. Takes off a helluva lot quicker now. You can find lots of mods for the 2.8's, you just have to look hard. They're out there.
Bolts ons like headers, and a nice cat-back exhaust on ANY engine will definately give it a more noticable kick. Even on a Geo Metro. It lets the engine breathe better. Disagreeing with that is like saying... you jog better while breathing only a little bit, rather than breathing freely. I don't know about you, but I personally would feel like I could jog alot further if I could breathe as freely as I could. As for the dual exhaust... how is that too much trouble Rally? It's would require the same work that would be involved with installing a single outlet exhaust. Dual exhaust would do wonders for his engine. Of course I wouldn't suggest Flowmaster. Magnaflow would work out great. But stick with the stock exhaust piping you have now unless you plan to get headers and a high flow cat at the same time. The piping you have now is 2.25". When or if you get headers, then that would be the perfect time to upgrade to 2.5" piping. You don't want to overkill it, otherwise you would lose alot of torque. Full Throttle Performance is a great site that sells alot of 3.4L parts. But pretty much any 3.4L part will work fine on the 2.8. The 3.4's headers would bolt right up to yours, as would the Jet underdrive pulleys. Bolt on stuff like that will fit fine. And another good site for 2.8 parts if ARI Racing Engines. I have others too, I just can't find them at the moment.

The 2.8's on the older camaros are not even close to the 3.4's performace wise. you probably didnt say that they were, but just wanted to throw it out there. Not to dis the 2.8's either....my friend has a 2.8 and so do many people on this forum. The parts are hard to find for the 2.8's but ive seen em....even seen a supercharger on a 2.8.

Re: Upgrade my '82!
eh, no prob. I'm just a V6 gearhead. I actually just found an aluminum alloy 60 degree block (like the 2.8's -> 3.4) on GMgoodwrench.com. It's only 59lbs, compared to my cast iron block which is 106lbs. I did the calculations on it, and it turns out it's a 3.0L, which can be bored out to a 3.2L (technically 3.18L). I'm debating on whether or not if I should get it. I mean, I'd be losing .19L (or 10.9 ci) if I had it bored out, but I'd also be shedding 47lbs. I'm just not too sure as to if it would be worthwhile though. I mean, there's a gain from weight reduction, but a loss from cubic inches.
