check engine light

can anyone tell me why my check engine light would be on. Nothing wrong with the truck but the light intermittently comes on for a few days, then off. Any suggestions?

If the light comes on, something is wrong. If the situation causing the light to come on doesn't repeat itself for a number of run cycles, the light will automatically turn itself off, but the codes will still be stored.

Recommendation: Go get your truck scanned, find out what codes are being thrown, and post them.

I bought a scanner at Nappa yesterday for $150. It's good for any vehicles that have 2nd generation computer technology. In the last 6 mo. my service 'service engine soon" light has come on 3 or 4 times.

I thought it a good thing to have since I'm going to squeeze every mile I can out of this beast.

I don't think that every time the light comes on, that there is something wrong. I have the same problem with a 2000 Suburban. Ya Know what it was. It was the fuel cap sensor, as weird as that sounds. And it was also the humidity and a bad connection to one of the sensors.

If the light is on it is in for a reason. If your gas cap is not on proporly this will cause a evap code. In short you may not think it is running bad but you should still have your computer scanned for codes. Take it to auto zone they will scann it for free. Just check back here first before you buy anything from them. They do not have trained techs at autozone so they do not allways know what is wrong for sure. But most people here can help if you have the code.
