97 eighty eight stalling

My 97 olds 88 recently started stalling while driving. Highway/city does'nt matter. Sometimes it does'nt stall instead the rpms just drop all the way down and it won't go over 20 mph. If I let it sit then it starts up fine until the next time it stalls.

Re: 97 eighty eight stalling

Check several items, Fuel pump relay, crank position sensor, ignition module. Also clean the throttle body and Idle air control motor it will improve the idle. You didn't say what size engine but these items are common of every size engine. Also check to make sure that the fuel pump is producing enough pressure. You can check it with a guage at the fuel rail. There is a shrader valve and you connect the fuel pressure guage there. Should be aroung 45 to 55 psi at idle. If not the regulator or fuel pump could be your problem.

If you have been driving for 30 minutes or more you may also have an overheating fuel pump which is shutting down and not producing enough fuel pressure. You will need to replace the fuel pump if this is the case. Hope these ideas help.

3800 Series II N/A..same as GP...I'd be looking at ignition issues here, like faulty ICM, coils, or a dead sensor in TB

still stalling 97 olds 88 3.8

I gave it in to a mechanic and he insisted it was the fuel pump. He said he tested it and gave it power and it was weak.It also generated a code o2 sensor and misfire. He calimed the fule pump could do that. Well $600 later I was driving and it did it again. It started sputtering and died. I let it sit and after a couple of restarts it caught but it was still sputtering like all the cylinders weren't working. It wouldn't go over 5 mph but as I drove like that the sputtering stopped and it started driving normally. It also generated a code random cylinder misfire.
