2006 Toyota Corolla XRS

Well I m planning to buy a 2006 Corolla XRS and I want to know your guys input on the car. I can't test drive it at my local dealer because it is a limited production car and they have to order one for me to drive it and it means I have to buy it. I know the car has the same engine as the Celica GTS and it's almost as fast or just as fast. Do you guys know what times this car runs or is it just as fast as the Celica GTS? What I m really concerned about the car is its handling capabilities. How does the car handle? Would I be able to make hair pin turns in it like an Integra, Celica, or Prelude Type SH? Would you guys recommend this car? Well I sold my Integra LS recently to get a 2000 Honda Prelude Type SH, but my mom ended up saying I can’t get the car because of the insurance price. Well right now I feel like I screwed myself over selling my Integra. My parents then said I could only get a four door car because of insurance reasons. The Prelude I was going to buy was $11,000 and they said I should just use that as a down payment for a new car under $21,000. The sportiest Japanese car I found was the Corolla XRS. Do you guys think I would get the same fun and excitement owning a Corolla XRS like I would in an Integra or Prelude Type SH?

well for starters, that high revving engine with a 6 speed is 180 hp in the celica and 170 in the corolla... but since horsepower ratings don't mean much when acceleration is conerned, torque and low weight are more necessary for that... and a 2006 corolla with a 1.8 liter has ALOT of weight and very little torque...

you certainly wont be able to follow a celica gts.. and the reason is weight... a 4 door family car is not a 2 door coupe... and if you get the corolla.. don't get your hopes up against a prelude or an integra.. you will be decimated... as for handling, from a guy i know around here that has one, its MUCH better than a stock corolla... but it's not a sports car..a prelude will make circles around you...


its a good car...it just has more spice to the sauce.

if you want something thats 4 door and pulls enough beat a celica or integra why not go test drive a nissan sentra SE-R ?

Actually the XRS isn't really that heavy. It weighs less than the tC, RSX, and some other cars in its segment.

Via Edmunds.com here are the following curb weights in pounds.(all w/manual trans and in best comparison to well equiped XRS)
- 2005-6 Corolla XRS = 2,670
- 2005-6 Acura RSX-S = 2,840
- 2005-6 Scion tC = 2,905
- 2005 Sentra SE-R-V = 2710
- 2005 Mazda 3-S = 2762
- 2005 Civic Si (with side airbags) = 2,782
- 2000 Prelude SH = 2,954
- 2000 Celica GTS = 2,500
- 2000 Integra GSR = 2,672

Now if you are going to give somebody advice on a car purchase, please make sure you give them correct information. The Corolla XRS is not a heavy car for what it is. Granted the RSX-S and some other cars you meantioned can/will still be able to beat it in a race. The Integra IS a better handling car though. I know people with Celica GTS's (newcelica.org) and this car isnt too much slower really. I also suggest a Sentra SE-R spec V, and possibly a Mazda 3-S.

I actually own a 2005 XRS and I can honestly say that it is a GREAT car. The craftsmanship is superior and the car drives much better than you would expect from a mass-marketed car.

What I like..
-Handling is good
-Shifting is smooth
-Priced competitively (considering options)
-Surprises other drivers when valve lift engages!
-Decent factory stereo

What I don't like
-Solid/torsion beam rear axle
-Original Equipment tires kinda skinny
-No reverse lock-out
-No telescoping steering wheel.
-Lift engages kinda late (technically at 6,000rpm but then felt around 6,600)

I have installed TRD springs, 17 wheels with wider tires, and a rear hotchkis sway bar. After doing so, the car has almost prefectly nuetral handling (in terms of under/over-steer. The car is a GREAT highway cruiser. Gears 1-5 are relatively short and 6th is a good over-drive gear (and you can still have a little ability to accel in 6th).

If you are looking for a sporty 4 door car but dont want a ultra high performing car like an evolution or STi, then I suggest the Corolla XRS.

well for you information, i did check what i was about to write and i must say that im pretty darn right about ALL i said... and i never said that the prelude was lighter...still, weigh is enemy number one and i doubt that you can outgun a normally aspirated 1.8 170 hp can beat a 2 liter 200 hp in a rsx or a prelude with a H22 with 195 hp and 160 lbs/ft of torque.

The best times I've seen XRS owners post have been mid 15's. The GT-S is doing high 14's.

Well thanks for all your guys opinions. I just ordered a Corolla XRS today. I made the hardest decision today by choosing between the XRS and Prelude Type SH and I choose the XRS. I hope I will be happy with my choice though. I would go with the Sentra Spec V, but I don't like how it looks and I m not so sure about the quality of Nissan. Plus my dad isn't a big fan of Nissan. My family is pretty much a Toyota Family, everyone drives a Toyota. My dad likes the reliability of Toyota.

Hey bud, you made the right desicion. I owned a 2001 honda prelude and BLEH!!@#! It was slow, it handled like a boat. so much body roll and undesteer, granted it is a little better than some other front drive cars but not many. I convinced my brotherin-law to get a corolla XRS, and wow i was throughly impressed. With an intake and exhuast on this car it sounds like an F1 racecar when u hit lift. The car pulls very hard, only downside is that you fall out of lift on every shift, unlike my S2K. They have Lift controllers and stuff where u can changed that. After you get lift to start ealier in the RPM band than you will see 14's easy. I raced his corrolla with my all stock Honda s2000 in 1st and 2nd gear, he stayed ahead by 1 car length, i suppose it due to the lower power band of toyotas motor, and his better takeoff. Don't pay attention to the numbers, once you hit lift then you'll relize. He raggs on his car on a daily bases hitting lift multiple times a day. There aren't any noticable noises differences after 67,000 miles he put on it in 2 years. Dude this is the right car if you want cheaper insurance yet still have somethin to play with. This car rox in my book. BTW he gets 30 MPG no matter how the car is driven.

I own a 05 Xrs and its amazeing how hard it pulls, you'd be surprised how good it handles, not to include hitting lift. Good choice!

Just to let you know the 06 XRS was detuned from the 05 XRS model.

Celica 180 HP
05 XRS 170 HP
06 XRS 160 HP (I also heard rev limit is lower?)

I've got one too. The 06 and 05 are essentially the same car is just the they method of calculating the power output had changed so they all dropped. You will notice this for every 05 car that was still made in 06.

Two words of advice if you love revving the car up all the time, use Mobil 1 15w-50 and use 5w-30 in winter. The stock transmission oil sucks. Someone recommended using Redline Oil that is GL-4 certified but I couldn't find it so I went to O'Reilly and got some Royal Purple 75w-140 and it works great since I rev the car up all the time.
