no oil pressure??

ok I have searched and I think I have found some answers, but I want to make sure I am reading everything correctly that i should check. ok yesterday i was driving and i noticed my oil pressure was very low, the needle was maybe a little less than 1/4 of the way up the gauge. today i started my car and the gauge shows absolutly NO oil pressure! the needle is all the way at the bottom. so if i read previous threads correctly, i have to check the oil sending unit which is a little round peice on the drivers side that screws into.... i cant remember and has a black wire comming out the top of it correct??, then check the oil pump, where is the oil pump located??? and how hard is it to install a new one???

Thanks,
Steve

Re: no oil pressure??

it would probablly be a bad oil pump.

changing the oil pump is something you should have a mechanic do. the degree of dificulty depends on where the oil pump is located, and what type of oil pump it is

I'm not sure what you can check on the oil pressure sending unit other then make sure the wire is attached. The oil pump is a pretty big job. It's on the timing cover and if I remember, it requires removing a significant portion of the timing side of the engine including the timing belt. If you are not familiar with cars, it's probably a good idea to either get help doing it or have it done at a shop.

Re: no oil pressure??

Oil sending units can very well go bad. They are relitivly inexpensive around $12. I would take a drive down to your local Mitsubishi dealership on monday and pick one up.

The stock oil pressure gauge is useless. I would recomend spending $65 and buy an autometer electirc oil pressure gauge. Mechanical ones are simpler, quicker to install & slightly more accurate. But there is somthing about having oil coming into the cab of my car that frightens me. If you choose to go that route i will cirtanly talk you through it.

If that fails, you will want to have a dealership, or trusted mechanic install the oil pump assembly. But labor will be ENORMUS! its more work then doing a timing belt.

Re: no oil pressure??

damn i hope its the oil sending unit! lol by the way, last time i got my oil changed i took it to Valvoline like a dumbass about 2,000 miles ago, instead of doing it myself b/c i was to lazy to, and i am wondering if they put the correct oil filter on, b/c dont you have to have an oil filter that can handle the oil pressure that our engines need? and i was wondering if that could be a problem, would they have the sending unit at the local autoparts store?? like autozone ect??? so i think i am just going to change my oil and filter and replace the oil sending unit while im at it and keep my fingers crossed! sound like a plan??? wish me luck everyone! lol

Re: no oil pressure??

by the way i do have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge, boost gauge, and air fuel gauge, but the oil sending unit (i think thats what it is???) they gave me with it doesnt fit, i think its to big, but my friend was helping me install it and he is the one that tried it so it doesnt work right now, so i might just try it again when i change my oil

Re: no oil pressure??

good call on the filter. Never use anything but OEM filter. So you have a oil gauge thats not connected?

Most shops here in CA will outright refuse to install mechanical ones for that very reason, as I discovered after blowing $55 on an OBX POS oil pressure guage.

I'm almost 99% sure that it's your sending unit. Let me know.

Re: no oil pressure??

did you replace the factory oil pressure sending unit with an OEM one? or did you eliminate it, and install Autometers one w/ gauge?

if your oil light isn't on, it could be your gauge in the dash.. you need to T off the stock and autometer sending units from the oil housing. if you eliminate the stock sending unit the Oil light will come on. If you installed the electric sending unit and gauge, and your pressure is still weak, or non-existant then its going to $$ ya.
