The new sensor could be a different design than the old one or by a different manufacturer. Go to Autozones web site and check to make sure the PN that fits your car is the same one they gave you. If not take it back. Also make sure he gave you the one you need. Do you intend to replace the one in front of the cat or after the cat. They may have given you the wrong one. The IAC doesn't need a gasket but the EGR needs a new gasket. If the old one is not bad you should be able to reuse it but you may want to have one just in case.

Re: replacing O2 sensor 97 grand am

thank you again.O2 sensor is fine, code is gone but code P0506 came up.removed IAC valve replaced o-ring cleaned valve and inside where valve goes.Replaced valve and car wouldn't start.I removed valve again and set pintle to specs in haynes repair manual.car started but dies when idling.Did I mess up by cleaning valve?Ithought that was ok to do.I used throttle body cleaner.

You might need to clean the throttle body as well. There is a hole that the pintle moves in and out of causing air to go into the engine. Make sure you cleaned that. You may also have to do a couple of cycles so that the computer knows that you put a new IAC on so that it sets it correctly. The manual should outline the proper procedure.

Re: replacing O2 sensor 97 grand am

I have replaced the IAC valve and since then the car will not stay started. It drives fine but it dies at every start and sometimes in middle of turns.rpm's are real low.I drove it to 75 -80 mph, rpm's never got above 2000.Shouldn't they be higher or does it even matter.
