Re: the promised pics of 040 !!

Great pics. but those BBS rims has to be one of the most ugly rims you can put on a F1!?!

Re: the promised pics of 040 !!

Polished rims (I think it's called the satin finish) would look the best on this car.

Black or anthracite rims would dull the colour and make it too much like smurf blue.

Chrome rims would look too flashy, totally not in keeping with the McLaren's image.

Gold rims? Uhhh....here is the result.

There seems to be a fair amount of misinformation floating around about this car - it seems primarily due to people making wild assumptions of what might be going on.
The car has been fairly well talked about on pistonheads.com where the owner has been happy to answer questions.
I know the owner and have driven the car several times.
The wheels - which seem to be the biggest point of comment/criticism are purely being used to experiment with tyres - the observant of you will notice that they are larger than standard.
As has been documented - the owner is having some suspension development done to improve handling - and wheels/tyres are a big factor in this.
Once happy with the tyres some 'proper' wheels will be sourced.

Re: the promised pics of 040 !!

And what is the misinformation? You haven't said anything that contradicts what anyone else has written.

We all know that the suspension is being experimented with because the owner (flemke) posted on Pistonheads and told us so, quite some time back.

So, what are these "wild" assumptions, exactly?

Pics are excellent Patrick - thanks for getting them for us.

= = = = = =

I really like the car - I think I always have. It's one of the most unique road cars out there and I think that makes it special.

I don't mind the current wheels at all - I think it's wonderful that someone with the knowledge and funds is trying to do something different with the car. Some might think that is a laughable proposition, but who are we to argue. This is an owner that's trying to improve the dynamics of the car without simply slapping the High Downforce Kit on it and calling it a day. That should be applauded I think.

I'd love to see someone like Tiff get a drive in this thing once the changes are completed to see what his thoughts are since he's had ample seat time in several F1s.

We should really be thankful that this isn't yet another F1 that's been locked in a garage somewhere under a cover, that will never be seen or photographed. I love hearing stories about F1s that are being driven by their owners, and its quite rare to hear of any of them making it onto a real racing circuit. Whether you like the color/design of the wheels or not, aren't there other reasons to be excited about what's going on here?

I am curious if the GTR's steering rack, with it's lower rack ratio, has been fitted to this car. Any chance you can shed some light on that joe911? That's one change that people seem to feel improves the character of the car.

Re: the promised pics of 040 !!

No question that it's exciting that the owner is trying to improve the car. That's really cool. I hope he takes care of the aesthetic aspect too, once all is said and done. It's a bigger size than the standard wheel, so, assuming the big size is retained, he will be putting on different wheels. If that is the case, I hope the colour is a pleasing one, and one that matches or complements the colour of the car nicely. That's all.

Looks are a subjective thing, but most would agree that the gold clashes with the blue.

It's still every bit a McLaren, and it is indeed wonderful that it's used properly. And it will continue to be wonderful, even with gold wheels.

Those are some pretty sweet shots and angles, even though if it may not be the best looking F1 ever.
