'98 Prelude vs. 2001 GT-S

Hey guys, I am looking at a '98 prelude SI for the same price as 2001 Celica GT-S. I want whatever car is faster and more reliable. Any suggestions?

Didn't know there was a '98 Prelude SI.. do you mean SH?

Is the GT-S auto or 6speed?

If the Celica is auto, the Prelude is ALOT faster. If the Celica is 6 speed then the Celica is faster.

One of my good friends has a '97 Prelude with intake/header/exhaust/intake manifold and I still barely pull away from him and I'm all stock.

Well it said on the car '98 Prelude SI. Maybe he meant 96. Its an older model. I love the Celica body. So I think im going to go with the Celica. I just want my car to be fast. I hate it when people pull up to me and want to race and I can't because i dont want to get embarassed(as you can see I have a Chevy Cavalier Ecotec. Not very fast).

Oh well, I like the Celica and it is a 6-speed with the VVTL-i. I dont know if that makes a difference but it sounds cool. I want to put header-back exhaust and an intake and maybe if i get enough money sooner or later i'll put a turbo in it. But i dont know if the stock Celica engine can handle a turbo.

Definitely go for the GT-S if they are the same price.

Before you begin modding your GT-S, please check out newcelica.org and do some research before you end up buying parts that don't make much power.

The stock GT-S engine (2zz-ge) can handle a turbo. Hass Autoworks is pushing 327whp / 243wtq on a totally stock 2ZZ with their Stage-II turbo kit running upgraded injectors, water injection, and the GT2871 Turbo.

Re: '98 Prelude vs. 2001 GT-S

can an auto really be that much slower? are you sure ur not egzadurating (dont know how to spell that). a stock prelude is WAY faster than an auto but a manual is faster than a prelude with like 20 hp worth of mods. that doesnt seem realistic. i know u know more about 7th gens than me but that just dont sound right to me.

GT-S 6speed: high 14's
GT-S Auto: Low 17's
GT 5speed: High 15's
GT Auto: High 16's

The GT-S auto is slower because it falls so far out of the powerband on each shift. Even with the 6-speed transmission, you can BARELY land in the powerband on the 1-2 shift.. so imagine how far the 4 speed auto falls out. I doubt you've driven a GT-S before, so let me tell you.. if you're not in lift you are barely moving. It takes a long time to get up to 6200rpms. But once you get there, it's pretty quick .

The GT Auto is faster than the GT-S auto because it utilizes the powerband better than the GT-S auto. Toyota never should have made the GT-S with an auto option.

Re: Re: '98 Prelude vs. 2001 GT-S

You have an ecotec cavalier and you are afraid to race it. I know a guy who has a manual cavalier and that thing is hecka fast for 140 hp. Is your's manual? His wasted my my 91 gt by 3 or 4 car lengths in the 1/4 and I was workin my car as hard as possible. He only had exhaust and intake and I had intake. Those things are quick for as little hp as they have. Anyways the new celicas gt-s has 180 hp, weighs little, and handles amazingly.

Re: '98 Prelude vs. 2001 GT-S

wow that sucks. i had no idea they were that slow. i thought you raced a 5th gen with some mods and beat him without going into lift. even a 5th gen is not that slow. isnt the ecotec like the 100 hp engine, cause the z24 cavallier has 150hp.

The ecotec has 140 hp and I believe 150 torque, the guy had more mods than me, but it still hauled somem booty.

Re: '98 Prelude vs. 2001 GT-S

GM R&D put out alot of crap for the Ecotec to make it a drag monster. I wish they spent the same amount of money to make good cars.
