need help with G20 starter removal

I'm trying to remove the starter on my G20, but I could not locate all the mouning bolts. I can find only one which screws sideways from the engine case into the starter. But that must not be the only bolt since the starter wouldn't budge after removing that one bolt. Can someone point out to me where any other mounting bolts are? Plus any tips on removing it would be much appreciated. Thanks,

tuan

Depends on the year of your G20.

I've got a P11, which would equate to probably 1999 onwards for a G20. If so, here's how to do it:

The starter is located in the worst possible place - to the rh rear of the engine block, about mid-way down.

To remove the bolts, you'll need to remove all the air intake ducts and plasticwork to gain access. You should then be able to find two bolts sticking out the flywheel casing (both are within 4" of each other). There a bitch to get to, so expect blood and tears...

Once the bolts are undone, you'll need to climb right underneath the car and get your hands up the back of the block.

First, remove the supporting strut which runs from the inlet manifold down to the deck. Two bolts - one at either end. Again, almost impossible to get to. You'll need to remove this stut to actually have enough room to get the starter out.

Secondly, unbolt the terminals from the back of the starter/solenoid.

Finally, pull the start out and spend the next 10 minutes trying to man-handle it out from under the car.

Voila! Easy job. When I did it, it took about 2.5hours to remove and about 3 hours to replace!

I have a 93.5 G20. I replaced my starter about 6 months ago. Like eeyore said, you have to remove the air intake ducts to get to the two bolts holding the starter. I recommend using a socket with unviersal joint so you can get to the two bolts.

Once the bolts are removed, the starter came off the engine with little trouble. i didn't have to remove any other parts like eeyore did. It just took a little time to get the starter w/ solenoid out.

Then place the bolts back into their holes, so it will be easier to attach the new starter. I had an assistant start to screw the bolts into the starter while I was underneath the car holding it in place.

I would say it took 60 minutes to complete the process.

Good luck.

Thanks all for the help. I did locate the bolts after removing the airduct. Those suckers are well hidden. It took a while but I did get it out and managed to find a Schucks that had a replacement in stock. So the wife can go to work this morning. Thanks again.

starter prob

i had my starter replaced a few months ago. after 60K miles, it was making a squeching sound...like i was killing the car. anyways, i heard that it was a pain to change the starter so i had a mechanic to it. it took him over 2 hours to take out. then an additional 1.5 hours to put in the new one. all i know is he was hating it.

my mechanic also told me that the nissan starts are not so good. i guess a lot of probs with them starters ;(
