Unhappy HELP needed: 1991 grand prix odometer/fuel light problem

the odometer on the 1991 grand prix that I have recently purchased has stopped working. my mechanic says it is not a loose wire or anything and the problem might stem from the transmission. I'll take the car to a transmission place, but I'd like to hear your opinions before I do. What might the problem be? How much would it cost?

Also, both my fuel and low coolant lights are constantly on. the analog gauges read fine. the mechanic said that the problem could be a bad sending unit in the gas tank. is it worth replacing the sending unit, given that the gauge seems to read OK?

thanks.

Re: HELP needed: 1991 grand prix odometer/fuel light problem

it sounds like you have a bad guage cluster, as all your problems are in the cluster but otherwise unrelated. I doubt that your vehicle speed sensor, low coolant sensor and fuel sender all went bad together. It is an electronic cluster, so you might check the connection at the back of the unit for corrosion.

Re: HELP needed: 1991 grand prix odometer/fuel light problem

the clusters in 1988-? gm cars are known to have problems you could try to replace it but this will not be cheap, in my 88 buick i have odometer/fuel gauge problems but the replacement unit is $250 at a JUNKYARD!? and that might end up having the same problem, so i just decided to live with it and carry a gas can in my trunk
