oil changes

Just wondering how often you guys change your oil and what weight you use....I do mine every 5k and use 5w30 during the summer and 10w30 when it gets colder. I know it's a dumb post but I'm bored at work. So deal with it.

Re: oil changes

Shouldnt you use thinker oil in the summer and thinner in the winter? I do it every 3000 miles. and on my new motor i use 5w-30 sae and the max life stuff. On my 89 i always used 20w-50. That was just cuz of the high mileage and it really dosent get to cold here in florida very often.

I always did lighter in the summer because of the heat, and thicker during the winter because it gets pretty cold around here. But maybe I'm mistaken?

Re: oil changes

The heat thins the oil. So i would think to use the thicker in the summer and the thinner in the winter. Because with the thicker oil in the cold i dont think it will lube as well.

Re: Re: oil changes

You want to run a thicker oil during the summer and a thinner oil during the winter. Extremely cold temperatures will cause the oil to thicken, and as a result you have less protection during start up (point at which most engine wear occurs) with a thicker oil than a thinner oil. Thus, thicker during warm weather, thinner in cold.
