95 sl2 only fires on starter fluid please help!!!

ok i know what starter fluid does to cars. Its not my car its a single over head cam. the guy had someone work on it before me. That guy put a fuel pump thinking that is it but its not. its getting 44 psi of fuel pressure the spark is jumping from tower to tower. the owner said it was really spitting and sputtering and anything over half throttle it would just dog out. It will only start on starting fluid from what i hear but it shuts right off. I check the fuel line bleeder valve and its getting plenty of gas i was told 44 psi also. i didnt get to check the injectors yet to see what kind of reading they get. what should u be getting on a multi meter? the guy also told me that when it was spitting and sputtering he try switching the spark plug wires. he said he put them on right and after that it wouldnt run at all except with starting fluid. please any help would really be great thanks alot..

wire routing should be(from left to right) on the block 1 - 2 - 3 - 4, on the coils 4 - 1 - 2 - 3. you can test injectior resistance with a multimeter (between 1 - 3 ohms). don't use a multimeter to test injectior pluse, test with a NOID light, availible at almost any auto parts store. the light should flash during cranking. if it doesn't check all fuses, starting with the INJ fuse, then look for wiring problems. if you do have a flash, search for airflow and mechincal problems, start by checking for a restricted exhaust by starting with the O2 sensor removed. after airflow and mechincal.

ok i got the car over here tonight. i took gas and put in the intake. it fired up. it shut right back off. its getting gas to the bleeder and out the return line. think it could be the iac tps or the temp sensor. the fuses look ok possably needs to be cleaned they look a little crusty. well anyone else have any more ideas? the fireing order is on by the way thanks guys for the info. all yeah what should the iac give out as far as ohm and the tps? thanks

i don't see a TPS causing this, a stuck open EGR or IAC is possible, in such case a multimeter will tell you nothing, try cleaning them with carb and choke cleaner, make sure they move freely. a bad ECT is possible, but unlikey.

anyway, you are thinking to far ahead. check for injectior signal, restricted exhaust.

right now i am betting 2 to 1 odds restricted exhaust.

i pulled the o2 sensor out. i tired to start and nothing. i owner punched the cat out a couple of weeks ago. he said he checked to see if thats what was doing it but it wasn't. as far as the fuel injecter i wasn't sure if it would get a signal if one of those where bad?ill check them it out

if the exhaust was restricted what would cause it from not putting any gas through the fuel injs the o2 sensor? what else would do it as far as sensors or what?

assuming all injectiors are not geting a signal check all fuses, starting with the INJ fuse, after that, visually check all wiring. if all fuses are good and all wiring is good, and you have spark and no injectior signal, a scantool will be needed for futher diagnosis, see if the PCM is receiving a crank signal from the ignition module/crankshaft position sensor. if the PCM has a crank signal but the injectiors are still not plusing, the PCM may be at fault.

i just put a pcm in the car and still nothing im getting like 12 volts to the injectors just not a signal i think. i took one of my multimeter wires and touched it to the one post on the injector harness and the other to a ground. i get 12 volts or close to 12 any how im not sure would a bad egr really stop the signal i even tried to unplug the temp sens. and still nothing. i noticed with the new pcm in the chims work when the keys not off the whole way that wouldnt have anything to do with it would it?

keep in mind the injectiors are ground side controlled.

use a scantool to see if you are getting a cranking signal to the PCM.

if you are, test the wiring between the injectiors and PCM, if you are not, test the wiring between the ignition module and PCM.

it was the ignition module i tried one that was in the trunk and that was it as soon as i plugged it in. i turned the motor over and the noid was blinking so i knew i had it i didnt think that had anything to do with the fuel. i was getting a really good spark jumping from the towers. thanks for the help
