stalling problem with 96 dodge neon dohc

I have been having problem with neon stalling. I can drive around town but once i get on highway about 65 it starts jerking, the rpms start bouncing everywhere, service engine light comes on, starts loosing power and then stalls, I wait a couple minutes and it starts back up. I have replace the control module on top of engine, spark plugs and wires, cam sensor, fuel filter. Had in garge and wouldnt do anything for him. I picked it up and drove about 30 minutes and did it again with black smoke coming out back. Does anyone have any idea what it could be

sounds like your o2 sensor not very expensive and easy to change

Re: stalling problem with 96 dodge neon dohc

Correct me if I'm wrong here. You have an auomatic transmission and 65 moh translates into about 3100 rpm?

Is it possible to slide the transmission selector into "2" and cause the same problem at a lower speed but at 3100 rpm.

Or even in low"1" see if you can cause it to sputter.

If it does then the problem is engine speed related and not necessarily horsepower related.

Check it out it is an easy test.

I want to determine if it is fuel supply related or ignition control related. High RPM with light pedal uses les fuel. I'm thinking spark advance exhaust recirc.....
fuel pressure.

Re: stalling problem with 96 dodge neon dohc

it seems be when driving normal. The last time it did it i drove a good ways and had to go up a good hill with the ac on and of course didnt have good power so pushed the gas on to get more speed. Once i got over the hill had a small hill to go up and it started in middle of that hill. Wasnt giving much gas for that hill. When it started a black puff of smoke came out the exhaust. I have taken to garge and them put it on computer but is reading control module or misfire. I am going today to auto zone for them to put in on computer and get the code for sure

Which one is it? Have you retrieved the codes yourself by doing the key dance?

To read any OBD codes, perform the following sequence.

1)Cycle the ignition key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON within 5 seconds.
2)Count the number of times the 'Check Engine' lamp on the instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual codes. For example, flash-flash-flash [pause] flash-flash represents the code 32. The last code you should get is 55, which is end of codes.

To cycle the ignition key ON means to turn it only as far as it takes to get the dash lights to respond. It does not mean to crank the engine.

12 is battery disconnect within the last 50 key-on cycles, don't worry about that one. The 43 is a cylinder misfire, 99% of the time it's one or more spark plugs that need to be changed. Go get you some stock Champion sprak plugs from Autozone, O'reilly's, NAPA or whatever store you prefer and change the plugs. After that pull the fuel pump fuse out from the PDC for about 10 minutes, then reinstall the fuse. This will reset the computer. After that if you still get the code 43, then you need to inspect your spark plug wires and coil pack for any cracks or defects. In fact, check them when you are changing the plugs.

Again, buy the stock Champions, don't buy platinum plugs!

The problems you were experiencing before was they needed to be changed. Replace the platinum plugs with the stock champions. Platinum's don't help the neon in anyway and can actually affect performance. I would do that first before buying wires. I have Magnecor wires on my car, I got them from Modern Performance.
