headers for LT1

I'm sure this thread has been done numorous times before so excuss me, I'm new to this site.

I have a '95 firehawk and I'm thinking of getting some headers. Would like some recommendations. Edelbrock headers claims 15/20 hp; that seems a little far fetched, but then again the advertisement didn't specify if they mean bhp or rwhp. I'm also looking at the BBK shorty headers; 5/10 horsepower gain. But what makes me hesitate on the BBK headers is the stark difference in the primary tube lengths.

I know cylinders almost never run equal in power output, even in most race cars, but the primariy tube lengths between the right and left bank on the BBK's aren't even close...

Maybe I'm just trippin...

I know the single exhaust set up on the F-bodies combined with the "sardine packaged" engine compartment contribute to the length difference; so I'm not looking to get an equal bank system. Ceramic coating is a must, though!

Please any recommendations?

Re: headers for LT1

I would go with edelbrock over BBK but your not going to get the claimed gains and those numbers always represent up to. Like if you had a stock manifold on a 383 built LT1 and you upgraded to a less restrictive exhaust cause you were choking your engine. Then yes you could get up to 20 or so horse but most likely you'll get right around 5 - 14 horse. I have heard good things about edelbrock even though I chose hookers.

Yeah, your right about the "claimed" horsepower. Those figures on the advertisement are only on hopped-up engines with the stock exhaust manifolds in place. then they swap'em out and put on their headers. It'd be a miracle if I saw 10 hp. I do plan on getting the LT4 conversion kit and the Magnaflow cat-back system later on.

I had no complaints with my SLP headers for my '95 Trans Am. They fit just fine.

The only issue I did have was burning a plug wire until I re-routed them. I didn't get them ceramic coated and I regreted not doing that.

I never dyno'd it so I can't advise a documented hp figure, but they were noticeble, I do remmber that.
