92 Olds Cutlass Supreme Won't Shift Out of First Gear

I only received one response to my problem that was posted on 7/30/05. I was hoping to get at least five other opinions on my problem. Strong first and reverse but won't shift to the next gear. Read the other post and please give me some help out there.

I'm thinking either the governor is bad or the second clutch is shot.

Had similar problem with a bonny, turned out it had eccess fluid in the tranny. check the fluid level, u probably know, but the car must be on in order to get a correct reading.

Re: 92 Olds Cutlass Supreme Won't Shift Out of First Gear

i have a 76' olds 442. When my tranny went out it would not take-off in drive. If i put it in 1 it would move enough to up shift and it would go. But I drove it to a trans. shop and found out the planetary gear was wasted. Dosent should like your 92' CS has this problem though, Unless you have recently done some Neutral drops. I'd take it to have it diagnosed, if it's something you feel comfortable fixing, you'd save $$.

Have you tried flooring the car in drive up till about the redline? Hopefully it will shift! I have had a simular problem with a 200 and a 125 series transmissions, and this did the trick. Sometimes a valve will stick in the valvebody. Usually does it in the winter though.

some times shifting into low and running it to the redline and shifting up through the gears will dislodge debre. And sometimes running it hard only makes it slip more. It is a double edged sword.

Re: 92 Olds Cutlass Supreme Won't Shift Out of First Gear

low gear and reverse are the same hub assy..the no upshift may be a modulator issue,,take the vaccuum hose off the modulator and see if there is any fluid in the line there,,I would suspect that your second gear seal are bad or the clutches them selves,,does it smell burnt on the fluid stick?? Good Luck!
