Free DIY mods?

I found this site where it had all these mods you could do to the engine for more power/ better temps, etc. I was wondering if there were any free mods/diy that i could do to my mkIII to get better performance (besides swisscheesing the intake box).

Things like this:
advancing the stock engine timing
exhaust gas recirculation mod
getting more fuel pressure to support light mods (disconnecting fuel pressure vacuum line from intake manifold.

stuff like that, anybody have any suggestions?
only mod i've seen people talk about is the intake thing, but....any others?

If you take the vacuum line off the fpr it will make it run right all the time and the ecm will reconize a vacuum leak and set a check light.

vw doesnt have EGR system. they have secondary air which is only used on cold startups.

2.0 arent performance cars. unless you have 5k to spend on a hefty turbo kit you wont ever have a performer. sorry
