Noise Diagnosis

Chevy Metro 2000. While driving a clunking sound can be heard from the rear espcially going over bumps. Sometimes it happens contantly while driving on the freeway. Recently serviced the whole brake system (front disc and rear drum) - found no problems there. Did an inspection of the car from below and did not see anything loose or broken.

Another thing I notice is that if the rear is lifted or compressed a creaking noise can be heard. I suspect it is from the suspension. Could it be either the rear shocks or the springs. Can worn shocks cause this kind of noise.

You say everything is tight and nothing appears to be missing, so the next thing to look at would be all of the rubber bushings associated with the susspension. Yes the shocks can make sounds much the same because they also have rubber bushings on at least one end.

Just a little PM tidbit to go along with the rubber subject I picked up from a guy that I have rebuild my CV axles:
Spray your CV boots, motor mounts, and any other structural rubber on your vehicle with Armoral and they will last much longer.

Sounds like a broken or worn out shock to me

OK thanks for the replies. I guess it is time for new shocks. I did not notice any split bushings from what I could see. I do have a split bushing on the driver side front lower control arm but it has been that way for a while - never bothered to replace it.
