Question Rub-on lettering; how to apply?

Yes iknow the subject sounds really stupid but here´s the question: I bought some rub-on letters ( originally to be used on modelrailroad wagons) and the letters will be placed on a satin- or flat paint. Should i first place the rub-ons on a clear decal film, and the apply the decal? Or is it possible to place them straight on the paint and then dullcoat it?

Like decals, they adhere better to glossy surfaces than matte.
While you might be able to get them to work directly on the model, I would trasnfer them to clear decal paper first, prepare the model's surface like you would for regular decals, apply, then dullcote when dry... - Mark
