94 AC question

Looking for a little information about the AC compressor on a 94 LaSabre. Noticed that the air through the vents was warm after about 20 to 30 minutes of city driving. The outside temps were about low to mid 90s. When looking at the AC clutch on the compressor I noticed that it wasn't engaging smoothly, just jerking. You could hear the clutch cycle on it just wouldn't engage properly. The next time the car was driven the AC seemed to work properly, nice cool air from the vents. Is this just a result of a hot day driving in city traffic? Our plan is for our trip to continue but would hate for the this to still be a problem, would the car's computer record anything about this? Any other ideas?

You might try checking the clutch air gap between the clutch hub which is the stationary part of the clutch (when disengaged) and the pulley (the part that moves all the time with the engine running). Use a feeler gauge and you should measure 0.020 to 0.030 inches. If the gap is too large, it might cause the erratic operation you are getting. If the gap is too large, you'll need a special GM tool (about 10 -15 dollars or you might be able to borrow one from a parts store) to readjust the gap. Also to verify that the gap is the problem, sometimes you can make the clutch engage by carefully tapping the clutch hub with a small hammer while carefully avoiding the moving pulley.
