Electrical Problem

My 97 GTP with 115,000 miles had some electrical problem. I took it out this morning and it ran fine. Came home, parked and enevr started again.
Here is what happens:
Turn the key on, sometimes DIC will come on,stereo works but when u turn the key further, nothing happens.
Most of the times, lnuthing come son but the speed and tachometer gauges will start flickering and the light in the gear display in the dashboard starts flickering.
I did clean the terminals and am goin back to clean them real good. I am baffled.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Electrical Problem

Did you try to jump the car? The battery may have gone dead to the point where the lights will function but nothing else. Secondly, the problem may be in the ignition switch itself. If it has failed then the car will not start but I have to believe that the issue is with the battery.

One other thing, did the security light come on when you tried to start it. If so it may be a problem with the passlock system and I would try another original key to see what happens.

Thanks GTP Dad for the reply.
Some more symtoms:
As i turn the key, the lights on the dash and DIC come on but very dim(although sometimes they come on full bright)
The fuel gauge starts goin up and tach and speed start going up but in jerks.
In these circumstances, the horn is real low too.
And i did try jump starting the car, no luck.
Replies will be appreciated

Re: Electrical Problem

I agree with GTP Dad that you have an issue with the battery. How old is it? Sounds like it has one or more dead or shorted cells. You can take it to Autozone or Advanced Auto and have it tested for dead cells and see if it will take a charge normally for free.

Re: Electrical Problem

Just because you get lights and other parts of the car to activate don't necessarily mean that the battery has enough voltage to start the car. When starting the car draws a tremendous amount of power and a battery that is only putting out a few amps won't start the car but will allow lights and other accessories to work. Jumping a bad battery may or may not allow the car to start either. Have the battery checked, if it is bad replace it if not try the ignition switch like I stated previously. Also you may want to check the main ground to the vehicle as it may be corroded to the point where you are not getting enough of a ground to allow the vehicle to start either.
