Low revs - poor performance

Hi

I have had my 1999 GLX, 2 litre (UK), 120,000 miles for a couple of months now. I alwasy use the best available unleaded fuel. Its peformance has been outstanding on the limited usage I have given it, until recently. On returning from a 400 mile round trip the revs suddenly got really low for the last 50 miles. Obviously this limited peformance with a top speed of 60mph on the flat and about 10-20mph uphill.
I initially thought maybe there was a fuel supply problem but if I stop the engine and almost immedaitely restart perfomance is good again for a couple of miles. Then I have to restart again as the revs quickly die (it also seems to 'shudder' a little just before the revs die). Also when I went out in it yesterday the engine warning light comes on (it has done this on and off almost since the day I bought it but is now more regular).
I am now suspecting the Catalytic Converter has aproble. Any views on this?
Also if this does need repalcing does anyone have ay ideas of the cost?

Many thanks
PajaP

This turned out to be the ignition coil. Loose connections. Currenlty held in place with a cable tie until I get a new coil (AA man advised it was not the connectors but the coil itself at fault).
