Re: are 5.7'z really fast?

Well it all depends on what you call fast. I can run into the 16's but i dont really consider it to be fast. However you can get more more out of a 350 for less money than just about any other engine. My truck will kill most any 4 cyclinder car in a drag, runs with 6's, and usually takes V8 cars off the line. This is because a 350 makes a lot of torque which gets you off the line quickly. My engine is not built for high speeds so pretty much after i get into 4th gear, right at 70, anything can pass me. Also most trucks with 350's have a somewhat low gear ratio, usually 3.73 or 4.10 where as cars have ratio's closer to 3:1. Bottom line is a 350 is made for power, not speed. However say if i were to get a different cam kit all that power would naturally make it fast. So if you wanna make a 350 fast, its gonna take puttin some extra money into it.

You dont have a race truck. Trucks were not built for speed. Have you weighed your truck?
From a 4.3 to a 5.7 is a noticable difference. You will be happy with it. But if your looking to go fast in a truck you might want to get an s-10 and drop in that 350. Add the right trans and some numerically high gears. If are into detail like me this project will nickel and dime you for ever.
When I see a guy leave a light in a big ass Silverado usually with atleast 30" or bigger tires tryin to be fast I get embarrassed for him. These guys put a noisy cat back exhaust on and think they are untouchable. Its about as bad as lowering a 4wd.

Those who know what they are doing though can still pass a Dodge Ram on the highway at 70mph while towing another vehicle. Sorry didnt mean to brag.

Re: are 5.7'z really fast?

I see your point but there is nothing i love more than these guys with there lil pimped out hondas and toyotas and what not that they have put every penny into and my "big ass truck" can beat them in a drag.

The point made about weight is a good one. My truck has a weight class 2 inspection sticker and weighs about 5900lbs empty. If you want a fast full size, get a 96-99 short bed regular cab 2wd silverado, put around $500-$1000 into and you wont be able to keep tires on it.

BTW repo agent, My 5900lb truck with its 33" tires and open exhuast is much faster than a 6 cyclinder stang and most any rice moblie. Dunno where your coming from with the passing of a dodge ram going 70 while pullin another vehicle, my old ford work truck can do that. But as always, to each his own.

Offroadjoe

Since you have a truck and you obviously like going off road maybe you shouldnt worry about the speed factor on road. Get a moderate lift kit (2"-3") with some decent A/T tires (even some mud tires are road freindly) and you will find the torque of the 4.3 is plenty when playing like a truck is meant to do. Maybe not the mud pits though. Not a 4x4? Neither is mine but dont tell it that.

A real woman will appreciate a park ranger telling you two to put your clothes on rather than watching a cop give you a speeding ticket.

It's so true. They think cuz I've got 32" A/T that I can't beat them. You should have seen the look on the kids face in that stang.... Same with the Scion.....

Re: are 5.7'z really fast?

if you want a real well built motor, find an old 327. they had much better compression and would beat any 350 if both engines were stock. no, thats not the modern 5.3, im talking about old school muscle car small block 327.

or hell, just drop a 502 in there lol!!!

Im a chevy guy by far. But I know that you guys are just pulling up to the wrong cars.

There are many factory stock cars that will run high 13 second quarter mile times. A big ass Chevy truck running a stock v8 will not have the acceleration to keep up with a lot of cars. But I am still hearing quotes like "I have beat any car I raced". I am not referring to a Dodge Neon with a bullchit muffler either.

Are you guys sure you are racing these cars or are you taking off from a light like a moron while the other guy laughs?

I am proud of every Chevy truck I have owned and I know there wasnt a Ford in the same CLASS that could compare but I know that my 16 second 5000+ pound truck has no right racing anything unless its another truck in its CLASS.

Thats as bad as Dodge when they use to compare the Midsize V8 Dakota to the Chevy v6 S10 or even worse the Ford Ranger.

Lets talk about who can haul the most. Now theres something to brag about when your a truck owner.

I once passed a kid doing 118 mph in his Intrepid, and IF I get the traction off the line it hits 60 mph in under 7 seconds, easily, but I'm not stock. Truck has 3.42 rear end with 30" tires on it, partial MSD ignition, chip, exhaust, and not sure what else.

You could buy a 2 wheel drive truck like this and throw a locker/LSD in the back and have awesome tractoin off the line, lighter truck, and a fairly powerful motor. But it's a truck so aerodynamics suck.

Edit: IF I launch in four wheel drive this fucker throws you back pretty hard, and even in high range the tires still bark a little bit, but these trucks aren't ment to be driven that way in four wheel drive.
