Cruise control on '01

My '01 'Bu has 78,600 miles on it, and the cruise control has developed a peculiarity that is very annoying. Sometimes, if I'm going straight and level, it'll work properly. Other times, it'll alternate between surging about two mph ahead of the set speed and falling a few mph behind it. It's quite jerky, and very odd considering the fact that I had always been impressed with the cruise control's smooth operation on this car. Er, that and I'm trying to sell it. Mustn't sell it without working accessories, now mustn't we? Or I might possibly keep it. I dunno yet, but I want to fix this. Does anyone have any idea as to what it might be?

Re: Cruise control on '01

Verify your connections on the cruise box located under the hood. Make sure that the cables coming out of the box are tight and move freely.
