door locks that don't work

Just recently purchased a used 02 Mazda Protege 5. Now we have 3 Mazda Protege's that we love but the 5 seems to have wierd door locks in that the keys on the drivers side only locks the door, will not open without keyless entry and the passenger side opens the door but doesn't lock it. Key works just fine in the iginition. Car does have a security system and I pulled the fuse out to deactivate thinking that maybe it was affecting something in the locking mechanisim. Still doesn't work. Has anyone had issues like this?

Thank you in advance,

MNWalleye

door locks

Finally got around to taking a closer look at this situation. Removed the cover on the back hatch and pulled out the lock core. Seemed to only work in one direction but after putting some oil and grease in the tumblers and slowly working the key back and forth, it finally worked. I was at first afraid of breaking the key off in the lock so I was relunctant to force it but sprayed the other lock cores with plenty of oil and just kept slowly working it back and forth and now all 3 locks work just fine. I suspect the previous owner only used the keyless entry so the locks just corroded a bit.

Since we have 3 of these cars in our household, A repair manual might make a lot of sense to keep these running. Can anyone recomend a good manual for 00-02 models?

Thank you,

MNWalleye

Re: door locks that don't work

I haven't seen any manuals for late Protege's other than the factory service manual. Haynes manual goes to 99 or 00 and would be better than nothing.
I found a factory service manual and wiring diagram on eBay for a fair price, they are expensive from Mazda. eBay has manuals on CD that aren't very expensive, but I suspect they are illegal copies done without permission from Mazda.

Re: door locks that don't work

With 3 Proteges in the family, I'd say, spend the $100 and get a factory service manual. I've bought CDs before and they can be annoying even beyond the fact that you constantly have to print relevant pages when servicing, so you don't get your laptop all dirty in the garage.
