Lightbulb I'v been cleaning my EGR wrong

Got a 99' V6 Rodeo
w/ 166,000 on it

Breif history
Original Owner
No problems, (but I do my maintence)
except for my trani
Trani -rebuilt twice 2nd time was under warrety from the 1st time and had to be redone due to unrelated item that went out.

My biggest issue
Frecking EGR valve.....replaced the 1st about 100K
Was told I didnt need to if I used B12 chem tool

CEL - has been on for a year and a half....did the cleaning and it still came back on......was about to go out and drop another $200 on a new one......

THANK the Isuzu GODZ for this site.....read the link "cleaning the EGR and Port for Dummies".....ummmmm...I guess I'm a dummie....

I have been spraying the Chem tool down the exhaust flow hole.."the big one"
and I never realized that I needed to clean the Pintle......

Also was about to put new Bosch Pulgs in it.....It looks as if I may reconsider....eventhough I own a 99 & not a 2000 I would rather not chance it........Looks like Denso for me

Any other suggestions I might need to know...still looking around I am sure I will find some more info

Thanks for any replies

Re: I'v been cleaning my EGR wrong

The key to cleaning the EGR is to make sure the pintel is free. This is done be using a stright tip screw driver and you put the pintle in and out and spray it too.

And you are correct you should spray the small hole, that tube exits right behind the throttle body butterfly.

It ws mentioned here and in the FAQ's that you can put a clear plastice flexiable tube over the exit EGR tube and then flush it; so the junk won't flush into the engine, but rather onto the ground (or a collection dish).

Other areas to keep an eye on is the PCV (I spray mine out with carb cleaner every 1k or so). Watch the oil (and change it before 3k).

Check out Diffy vent tubes to make sure they are not plugged up.

And watch your alt, since you are up there in miles.

cleaning the EGR for dummies, to funny, I was the dummy who wrote it. I did that after spending 3 weeks reading on the subject, overthinking it, and then finally actually doing it, so easy then! It definately was builton the shoulders on giants, kudos amigo-2k, 2eyefishclaw, and the rest for making it possible!

Keep an eye on oil level often between oil changes, the early 2nd gens have oil consumtion issues, and can burn up to quart every 500 miles. Not all do, mine (99) has not suffered this problem, knock on wood! I check my oil every fill up, and especially on long trips.

Re: I'v been cleaning my EGR wrong

I too over-thought the process of cleaning the EGR. After just jumping into it, it was easy. My only problem is my car dies when I start it with it unhooked. Same with the PCV line. Not a big deal if you have a helper to give it a little gas. The FAQ halped me a ton.
