Question 87 wont shut off

Did a complete tune up it runs good but dosent want to shut down it Diesels a little, I set the timing and lowered the Idle speed but it still wants to diesel a little, the car has been sitting and we bought it for a project and I dont know if I may still have some bad gas in it or not, I ran it almost empty. Its a 87 Z 5.0 carb

thanks

Re: 87 wont shut off

Youre sure the firing order is correct and when you set the timing, you disconnected the advance wire?

I did remove the advance wire, but I havent checked the firing order yet, I just got the manual today so I know where to start, it dont miss or run bad it just wont shut down, I have heard that a gas cap could be bad, causing it when I do set the idle down it wont run, do you know anything about the gas cap, I cant remember if it has the vaccuum sound when I open it or not, I hear it can cause a gas lock..

thanks

Ira

Re: 87 wont shut off

usually two things are going to cause this, either a the timing is out of whack of b the carb is out of whack from my experience.

Re: 87 wont shut off

Preliminary point would be to check the idle speed and for any vacuum leaks.

But, let's back up a sec.

Did the problem exsist before you 'tuned' it up?

What did this "complete tune up" consist of?

I think retracing your steps will solve the problem if it didn't exsist beofre. The quadjet (e4mc) carb is not very tolerant to the inexperienced, no offense. Just stating, I don't think the carb is your problem at this point, I believe it's the ignition system..

Well I have had ideling problems since day 1, I have replaced Cap,rotor, wires, coil, plugs, the car was in a barn and the lady died or something and her nephew tried to get it running, he had replaced fuel pump,starter,plugs,cap,rotor,O2sen, and a few other things, the engine sounds strong, it might lack a little power but It just wants to diesel now for a few then it shuts off, the carb may have been adjusted by the person before me, I dont see thata any holes have been drilled out to access the jets or adjustments thou.

The computer controlled carbs had/have a "fuel shut off switch" in/on them that is supposed to shut the fuel off when you turn the key off, to prevent running on.
