Hi all, just got my 1/12 Bridgestone Potenza tyre stencil through the post from HLJ this morning. I just wanted to get some ideas of the type of paint to be used that will stay on the rubber tyres and perhaps a type of protective coating?
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. |

I thought about that couple weeks ago and I decided to try it with the Tamiya paint for R/C cars, the paint used for the lexan bodys! I hope It won't crack at fast as normal paint... any opinions on this???
Anyway I will try this on my McLaren MP 4/6

You can also try Tamiya Acrylic White with a little Flat Base added to it... - Mark

Re: What paint to use for tyre logo stencils?
I have seen somewhere that Enamel paint should get better result.
Never tried before.

Depending on the compound the tires are made of, enamel doesn't always cure.
It may seem "dry", but can be subject to smudging or smearing, or worse, being tracked on to another part of the model without realizing it until damage has occurred... If you want to use the R/C paint, I'd experiment first. My experience with Pactra R/C white showed it was not all that opaque, at least not without a couple-few coats. You want a paint that will cover in one shot... - Mark |

Thanks for all your inputs. I have assumed that a matt white acrylic type (like Tamiya XF-1) would be suitable, I want it to dry flat and not be susceptible to cracking.
More insights/opinions/suggestions would be welcome... |

Use an acrylic paint (enamels and lacquers take too long to cure...sometimes not at all depending on the tire's chemical makeup). Use either Tamiya flat white or Testor's Acryl white primer. I also add some smoke or semigloss black to the mix as no painted tire stencils are pure white...Michelin's modern F1 tire decals however, are.

If you are close to a wal mart. go check out the craft department, pick up a bottle of apple barrel white craft paint. mix it with a little bit of water to thin it to your liking and apply. it dries in a matte finish. I used this on the raised tires for the front runners on my mustang, shot them with some testors dull coat....they look awesome.

Re: What paint to use for tyre logo stencils?
I haven't tried it, but R/C acrylic paint is a logical choice: It has a flex agent in it, to help it bond to the Lexan body when it flexes and vibrates.
Tamiya, Pactra, and Parma all sell acrylic Lexan paint, but be careful because Pactra also sells bottle lacquer paint for Lexan, which I don't think would work as well. |

I've seen Tamiya polycarbonate paint used with tyre stensils. Looked great. I think it would be the way to go because the paint has some flex in it so it won't crack when the tyre stretches or compresses.. |
