Turn sigs, fuel gauge, temp gauge don't work, Haz light works 1984 2WD pickup

While I'm waiting for a factory manual I ordered, would someone give me some ideas about this problem. The turn signals don't work, even manually, but the hazard light works normally. The temperature gauge and the fuel gauge also went out at the same time, and the dash lights as not as bright as they were when everything was working although they are still ok. The backup light is not working...I'm not sure it went out at the same time, but probably did.

I've seen an electrical diagram from a "early model" and it looks like the same fuze supplies the hazard switch which in turn supplies the flasher relay which then supplies the turn signal switch and on to the lights themselves. The hazard switch also seems to supply current directly to the lights, bypassing the flasher relay. Does the hazard switch have a built in flasher relay of its own? I'm trying to find a reason why the turn signals would be dead but the hazard lights work normally.

Also trying to find a common link between the turn signals and the two gauges that are dead, the fuel gauge and the temp gauge. I haven't spotted anything yet, but I'm not sure this wiring diagram I'm looking at covers the 1984 pickup.

Looking at the fuze box on the left interior wall under the dash, the fuze box plastic lid doesn't list a fuze for the turn signals, and no mention of gauges or dash either. Is there another fuze box (besides the one in the engine compartment on the right wall) that I don't know of?

Also, can someone tell me where the flasher relay is located, I want to make sure it is grounded. There is a green relay looking thing on the left interior wall fuze box, but I couldn't get it out to read the lettering that would identify it.

I'm new to this car and flying blind as far as the electric circuitry is concerned. I'd appreciate any help, and especially a link to the correct wiring diagram and relay locations list.

The previous owner warned me about this problem, said it have happened to him several times but always corrected itself after awhile.

Thanks in advance,

John

Although the turn signal switch and hazard switch appear to be 2 different switches, they are actually 1 unit (which also includes the headlight switch), and the power is supplied via the HORN fuse. You may have a bad combination switch assy (could be dirty contacts).

Power to the gauges and/or idiot lights comes from the ENGINE fuse, if it's a power problem, all the lights/gauges should work or not work. If some do and some don't it's another cause (the inst cluster panel maybe), quite posibly a bad/loose ground to the panel.

There's only the 2 fuse boxes you mention.

There's only one flasher relay, and it is the green one. It's working since the hazards work (BTW, it's an electronic 3 contact type, not the 2 contact bi-metal type).

The b/u light switch is mounted on the tranny and power comes from the ENGINE fuse.

There is a rehostat that adjusts the brightness of the dash lighting. It's the knob just to the right of the steering column.

Re: Turn sigs, fuel gauge, temp gauge don't work, Haz light works 1984 2WD pickup

Thanks for the help...the problem turned out to be a blown 30A fuze in fuzebox under dash, left side. The fuze(wrong one I believe) was the bottom(3rd from top) fuze in the 2nd column of fuzes from the right(front) side of fuzebox. There are 4 columns of fuzes in this fuzebox.

Interestingly the circuits that were not working were turn signals (but haz flasher/lights were working), alternator idiot light, fuel gauge, temp gauge, backup light, alternator (battery ran down after 3 days). The dashlights were working but slightly dimmer than normal...probably picked up voltage from another circuit(the dimmer wouldn't work on the dashlights).

I replaced the fuze with a 25A fuze, all I had, and it blew 3 hours later so there is a problem but I can't figure it out without a wiring diagram.

Can you identify the fuze from the position it was in. It would help me figure out where the short is if I knew which fuze this is (Engine??), and what size fuze it should be (I'm guessing 15A).

Do you have a library card, or are a student? Libraries and schools can provide access to online databases that have automotive manuals (usually free) from home.
Make an enlarged copy of the wiring diagram, this will make it easier to read, mark off sections, and make notes as you check circuits.

Good idea...but my local library is under construction. I'll call around to other libraries and see what they have.
I do have a factory manual coming from an eBay auction, but the problem doesn't want to wait for that.

Tried the Autozone wiring diagrams, they seem to be a mix of a lot of diff models and types (diesel, gas, carb, fuel injection) and aren't specific enough to show me the exact wires coming from the fuze I'm having problems with. I need to be able to follow both wires from the fuze to see exactly which circuits they are involved with...it's the only way I'm going to find what's causing this short. Currently I can't drive more than a mile, sometimes 5 seconds, without the fuze blowing. And that's with a 25 or 30 amp fuze, which is larger than normal I think.

While I wait for the factory manual to show up, I'm going to start unwrapping the wire covering for the two wires that go to and from the fuze in question (a thinnish red wire and a thicker yellow/black wire). I need to follow each wire from start to finish...so if anyone has done this before and can help with any kind of information...much appreciated!

The fuze is in a 4 column fuze box under dash, left side. Each column of fuzes has 3 rows (not all slots have fuzes) and the one in question is 2nd column from the front of car, 3rd slot down from the top.

When you get your book, make enlarged copies of the wiring diagrams. This will make it easier to read, follow, and mark off the circuits you are checking. Use colored markers or pencils.

I now have the Toyota "factory manual" which has better wiring diagrams, but it doesn't have precise wiring diagrams that show the exact paths and junctions of the wires. The Toyota wiring diagrams seem to be drawn so that they fit the page conveniently and the wiring paths aren't necessarily in the correct sequence. The wires end up at their destinations but how they get there seems to be a condensation of what they actually do on the car.

I'm used to VW wiring diagrams that allow you to follow every wire to every device and show every junction and branch on the way sequentially. I wonder if anyone can recommend a Toyota manual that has this kind of wiring diagram. It would sure make this an easier job.

I don't like the Toyota wiring diagrams either. By making enlarged copies of the diagrams, you'll leave yourself room to make notes as you are checking the wiring.
