Auto trany stuck on drive

Hello,

I have 1996 Chevy Cavalier, 2.2 Automatic transmission, it was running fine until today , the automatic transmission stuck on D ( drive ) , it happened while I'm driving normally , when I stopped on signal light , I put it on neutral ( as I'm used to do ) , but i noticed the car still moving ,this where I noticed the automatic was stuck on D , I can move the automatic transmission handle in any way I want ( I mean I can put it on park, reverse , neutral ) but on the dash board shows drive , and act as on (drive) no matter what I change it any place . of course I can't now run the car while it is on drive , I have remove the cover for the transmission handle and it seems ok , nothing suspicious or broken part .

Crazy idea jumped to my mind ( if I removed the battery for few minutes , this may can reset anything electronic , but no luck with that also )

Can any body help me where to look what caused the problem and how to fix it.

Thanks
