Re: 97 4cyl wrangler hard to start

Have a fuel pressure check done. Sounds like your loosing pressure when the engine is off. Fuel pressure should not drop more than 20 psi in 30 min from the running psi.

You can make your own fuel pressure gauge like the one in this link if you want.

Re: 97 4cyl wrangler hard to start

should the pressure drop over a short time, may have an ejector leaking with engine off... in the past, i've pulled the rail with all injectors, wait for an hour, see which injector has fuel drizzling out of it... this is the one needing replacement if you don't do them all to begin with... just my opinion -Kevin

Re: 97 4cyl wrangler hard to start

Some have found that the pressure regulator was leaking instead of the injectors.............. but a good injector check none the less.....

Unhappy 94 YJ 4 cyl hard to start

My husband and I purcased a 94 YJ and have been having trouble cold starting. It starts after about 4 cranks. Once it runs for a while there is no problem re-starting. It also has an annoying engine knock, sounds like noisy pistons. For which we've tried premium gas and synthetic oil.

Any ideas?

Re: 94 YJ 4 cyl hard to start

for the noisey knock u hear,i had the same problem when i had a 95 rio grande,i would just put a whole bottle of lucus heavy duty oil stabilizer in it,it should quiet it down some, but most four cylinders ive had or been around always sounded like they are going to fall apart,as for the hard starting,it could be anything from fuel to timing or even an 02 sensor going bad.

Re: 97 4cyl wrangler hard to start

First, I would be very concerned about the noise before the starting issue. Putting in a heavy duty oil stabilizer will only cause the starting problem to become worse since it gets better after it warms up. Is the "noise" a tap or series of taps (almost unable to tell the taps apart)... OR, more like a nice single knock "knock not a tap". Taps are almost always in the valve train system--- FIRST, lifters SECOND, rocker arm lash-between valve stem.... IF IT'S A KNOCK -- much more serious problem to solve..... Usually, wrist pin, connecting rod issue..... I JUST WENT THRU THIS ENTIRE TROUBLESHOOTING, replacing lifters- no help... Found #2 piston lower skirt broken causing wrist pin to "KNOCK".... Also, before changing lifters, a good engine flush could help?? let me know, PLEASE, KEVIN [email protected]
