02' sunfire speaker upgrade?

I have a 2002 sunfire (2.2L 5 speed) and i am wanting to upgrade the rear 6x9s I do not, however, know what the current wattage is for my factory speakers. I do not want ot end up downgrading.

As my car is second hand i do not know what it all came with. I do know it is a relitivly plain car with no cruise. I doubt it has the monsoon system.

I know that there are probably a few different sound systems it could have come out with so any help is apreciated.

Re: 02' sunfire speaker upgrade?

ummm any aftermarket speaker is an upgrade, since the speakers are like 4 watts, I don't think you can buy a speaker from a store that weak.

4x6 in the doors (2-door) and 6x9s in the back deck (top mounted) watch the depth, since the trunk springs will get in the way. and the doors, they are deeper than just about any 4x6. I used plates in the doors and they sound excellent.

really? wow...I figured they were fairly good considering the bass i can get from them.... but i guess that means the 120watts i got will work fine.

(I know that is not much but they came with my van so i am not complaining)

Re: 02' sunfire speaker upgrade?

yep, and removing the interior is a pain in the rear. here's a good Idea of the work involved. it doesn't mention that the hole for the 6x9's is for EXTREMELY shallow speakers. Therefore, you will have to cut the holes larger for any real speaker to fit with a top-mount install (like mine LOL). You CAN bottom mount the new speakers, just watch the depth to clear the trunk springs.

it's big, but print it out.

MODS...this pic will be on my server until 8/6/05. Emailed by request after that.

Re: 02' sunfire speaker upgrade?

I would recomend top mounting them. Its a hell of a lot easier to just pull the carpeting out and put them in that way. And keep the mounting bracket, otherwise the cardboard/carpet/fabric backing will cave in.

Also, you will probably have 4 wires coming out of the speakers, the only way I found is to connect two of the wires up to the leads that come with it, so it takes a little while to get it all set up. Oh, and be glad you dont have the Monsoon system, its a pain in the arse, the factory amp is a pain to wire around.

Re: 02' sunfire speaker upgrade?

To top mount you HAVE to cut steel. I know, I did. my Infinity's (6x9's) wouldn't fit in the tiny hole GM uses for their shallow 6x9's, so with a body saw and a grinder I made them fit. You also have to clearance the mounting bracket, since it won't fit the new, wider speakers. Use harness adapters to make life simple, available at any Best Buy and Circuit City, or your local car stereo shop. with about an hour or two of hard work, you should have a decent pair of 6x9's mounted in the factory location.

Then they must have changed the rear deck in the the cars later. I have an 01 fire, and my pioneer 6x9's fit perfectly, the only thing I had to cut was my carpeting stuff. And I didn't have to watch for the trunk arms either.
