89 Grand Prix Stalling

Hello. I have an 89 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1L MFI V6. Recently whenever driving and coming to a stop or making a slow turn my car dies. After this, it will start right back up. In addition, when I start the Grand Prix the RPMs surge to 2000 and then go back down to 800 RPMs after 10-20secs; and at stop lights when the car hasn't died, it will try to surge forward. Is this likely a faulty EGR valve, Fuel Pressure regulator, or something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your TCC (Torque Convertor Clutch) solenoid is sticking.

Your transmission locks in the convertor above 45 mph to increase fuel mileage. When the solenoid stick on, the covertor wont unlock and when you come to a stop its like coming to a stop with a manual trans and not pushing in the clutch.

Try this, on the front of the trans right behind the bell housing about half way up on the case will be a four wire connector. Un plug it and try driving your car again. If the solenoid is bad this will keep it from engaging.

Maybe this will help, maybe not. For the price, its worth a try.

Re: 89 Grand Prix Stalling

Mobil 12 is right about the TCC solenoid problem. I would check for a vacuum leak as well since the car is surging. It is possible that the MAF sensor dirty and needs to be cleaned that will cause surging as well. Finally, you can remove the EGR valve and clean the passageways leading to the manifold. These will carbon up and cause a restriction to the EGR valve. The valve itself may not be bad at all.
