Question 96 Grand Am Transmission

There is nothing wrong with my transmission atleast I dont think so... I got it flushed only a few days ago, allthough the tranny has 156K miles on it the mechanic said it was good as new. Anyways when I "floor it" like during a race it gets up to 40 and tries to shift but red lines and wont shift until the RPMs drop back down. Is this some kind of saftey percausion? If yes can I remove it? Because I have a need for speed...

Not sure on engine size, its a used engine with around 60k Miles V6 probley 3.1 But not sure.

Re: 96 Grand Am Transmission

Welcome to the forum. This sounds like 2 possible solutions:

1 ) - the flush broke loose shit in your tranny that was built up into the tight spots, and now it's floating around messing with your shifts

or

2) - it could be MAF related - possibly a bad MAF, or maybe even a bad shift solenoid.

Well the tranny did this before the flush, I just though the flush would fix it because it was older, but I'll have the MAF and shift solenoid checked out. But your sure that it isn't some kind of saftey device?

Re: 96 Grand Am Transmission

When the car red lines and wont shift are you manually shifting, or do you leave it just in drive when flooring it? Just curious. A trany will run around $1000 but the labor costs will probley exceed the cost of the trany though. Unless you're able to remove and install the transmissions your self of course.

Re: 96 Grand Am Transmission

I leave it in drive....yes I know not good racing tactics but oh well...I priced a new tranny at 850, and I have connections on somone that can put it in....for cheap but not free...lol

Hey GAF! Cheap is better than a full price job, anyday! 850$ sounds like a good deal too. Try manually shifting once and seee if it shifts up when you shift it. If it does it could be a selinoed switch, or something cheaper than $850. Good Luck
