Question 92 Roaring....

My 92 has started making a roaring sound lately...It does it if i make a left or right turn and accelerate....It also does it if u accelerate hard to pass....After ive drove it for about 15mins i can stop, put the car in park and turn the wheel all the way either direction...When i do this the car makes a sound....It sounds like maybe a cv axle turning but slipping and clangin on things and then the powersteering startes goin in and out....any help would be appreciated......

Re: 92 Roaring....

I assume you have checked your power steering fluid level? It could be early signs of pump failure also. The clanging noise has me confused!!

Re: 92 Roaring....

Agree with Hotz - problem is most likely in the power steering pump. It may be low on fluid or the bearings are going bad. When pumps are really bad, periodically it can be hard to steer as well as move the steering wheel by its own vibrations.

Ive filled the fluid....It could be the power steering ....But would that cause the car to lose power like it has or cause the roaring under turns or heavy accelerating....The power steering works great untill u park it and turn the wheel hard either way.......

Have you checked the wheel bearings and CV joints?

Re: 92 Roaring....

Any idea where the clanging noise is coming from, under the hood, strut area, cv or wheel area?

Re: 92 Roaring....

Start the engine and leave it in park, rev the engine and let it back off. See if you notice the clanging noise when is is backing off.

Sounds like you've blown a water pump, idler and/or power steering bearing. Drop the serpentine belt and check them to see if they rock back and forth (from engine to fender wall). Also, look for metal shavings.

With all new struts and a CV boot, your looking at least a thousand dollars in repairs.

Re: 92 Roaring....

That "clanging" or popping sound is in the trans. It is discussed further in the link below.

Also, be sure to check the harmonic balancer. Sometimes the rubber between the inner and outer ring will separate and cause a random clanging noise. Put both hands on outer ring and see if you can turn it. If it moves back and forth with little effort, it is broken!
