Dead power window!

This afternoon I fired up my '99 Stang LX to take my girl for a ride, and for no reason at all, the driver's side window refused to go up. I had put it down to keep the car cool inside, so it's stuck down now. You can imagine the problems - my car's desperately in need of a wash and I can't do it!

How can I fix this problem? The power mirrors and the passenger window still work from the driver's side controls, it's just the driver side window that doesn't work. I've looked down into the window well and I can't see any obstruction.

One thing that might be notable, the driver's side door speaker pops when I press the window button down, but not up. The speaker has never worked right since I got the car used, but it might be something.

What should I look for?

Re: Dead power window!

Power window motor. The plastic gear on it may be stripped (common problem). Otherwise the motor just died and will have to be replaced. You can get to it by pulling the inner door panel off. Not an extremely difficult job, just somewhat time consuming, atleast it is for me. Good luck.

Re: Dead power window!

And, completely randomly, the thing started working again. I've been having a ridiculously good night, and my window decided to fix itself to add to that.

No idea why it stopped working. The electronics in that door seem to be very whacked out.

Re: Dead power window!

sounds like a bad connection to me, grime collects over time and gunks up the works. next time it fails take the motor out and connect it to a 12v battery that you can pick up at any hardware store for 8 bucks. either red or yellow wire can be connected to positive and if the motor starts to work you can assumethe problem lies with the wireing and not the motor itself.
