ls vtec questions please help
i have a b18a1 ls motor compression is 165 all 4 cylinders... runs good
i just bought a b16b type r complete head and i got the golden eagle ls/vtec conversion kit... came with everything i need.... is it true if i change my oil pump to a type r oil pump i could rev higher then 7 without spinning a rod bearing or cracking a rod?... i heard of that happening if u leave the ls block stock and rev high... will puttin a bigger flowing oil pump elimenate this? or no? if not what needs to be done to at least rev to 8 or 8500? |

Re: ls vtec questions please help
Nope...With the ls/vtec the rods and pistons are the weakest part of the set-up...get some crower rods, and CTR pistons, with the oil pump and raise the compression to 12:1. then you could rev it to 8000rpms...belive me the last thing you want to do is throw a rod. remeber the rod only has 2 places to go; up into the head, or into the cylender wall

I turned a B20/VTEC (has the same crank and rods as the LS) to 8500 and even had some miss-shift 9000 RPM blasts, and it lasted quite a while. The biggest factor in bottom ends letting go is the rod bolts. The stock LS bolts are very prone to streching, and a set of ARP's will help greatly.
Crower rods are overkill, and there are better choices than CTR pistons, especially if you think he's going to dive right into a high comp setup with little to no tuning. Browse around the all-motor forum on Honda-Tech, maybe people using stock LS rods with good fasteners and turning their motors 8000+ with some longevity to them. |
