92 Olds Cutlass Supreme Won't Shift Out of First Gear

I have a 1992 Olds Cutlass Supreme with a 3.1 liter and a 4T60 transmission. The vehicle will not shift out of 1st gear. If you drive it up to 25 mph and punch it, it makes some what of a shift then the motor is free spinning and the transmission is not engaged at all. Punch the accelerator again and it down shifts as if going in to passing gear but it is just re-engaging 1st gear. Tested the computer with an Autozone code tester and came with code 12. Anyone had this problem or knows anything that may be helpful, please reply. Trying to help a lady who is on limited funds

just replaced my tranny had 1st and 3rd no reverse, something about the mesh gears went bad, does it have reverse?

Yes, the vehicle does have reverse and it is strong in both reverse and 1st gear. Shows no sign of slipping in either gear and transmission engages as soon as you place it in either position.

I had the same thing happen with my 90 same engine and tranny, ended up replacing the tranny, if you have a used one put in make sure that who ever put's it in knows what they are doing other wise you might have more problems
