Going to buy a 2000 neon with 100k miles

Hey I have the opportunity to buy a 2000 dodge neon with 100k miles for 2800.00 I was wondering what ususally goes wrong with these cars and if they are very reliable in the high mileage range. I only know about mitsu's and honda's and i haven't really heard anything great about neons, so the good and the bad would be great!

The miles are high but it also depends on what kind of miles they are, highway or city. The neon can be a very reliable car just like any if it is properly maintained. Things you may want to look for are cosmetic damage, look at the interior, pop the hood and inspect hoses, lines and other stuff for cracks. Try to get an overall feel about how the car was taking care of. It is hard to do, but it can be done.

my neon has 133000 miles, thats a crap load for a neon. I totally agree with the last guy, if you take care of it, it will last. Wheni first got mine, i did a tranny flush, radiator flush, oil change, and a new wireset, spark plugs. Oh and by the way kinda a funny note, when i got it i took off the valve cover and one of my rocket arm bolts had fallen down the side into the valve spring hold area. Check everything and do a major tune up. Mines runs great, i also added heat resistent fabric to the intake pipe, my neon runs goood..Nick

Bah, I know people with 300,000-400,000 miles on their original engine and tranny

Wow really, thats pretty good, my tranny is kicking like a mother right now though, the engine is excellent, but the transmission, bah bah bah, stupid Automatic transmission, next car will be a stick so much easier.

Have you adjusted your kickdown and reverse band? That may help you out.

Why not swap in an MTX into your car and pick up some acceleration?

100,000 ain't nuttin. but don't tell the seller that(he may be in here)

I got 230,000 on mine. Mind you a rebuilt engine and new struts, fuel pump, tie rod ends, rad, tranny seal etc, a load of tires along the way..... that boy-slave did for me.

The only creepy thing was the tie rod ends. The struts were punky and I had crappy feel and did not detect the slop in the tie rod ends. They were in very bad shape by 140,000 miles. It was the only near failure that ever made me pause and thank God.

yeah man i can riped any engine block apart and do anything, but when it comes to automatic tannys, i'm like a 2 year old, i dont know crap, but hell man if you wana tell me how, that would be great

To tighten your kickdown band, here you go:
The kickdown band adjustment screw and locknut is located at the top left side of your transmission. Remove the battery and the tray, then detach the fuse box and move it out of the way. Loosen the locknut(the smaller nut, the first nut) about five turns until the adjusting screw turns freely. Then tighten the adjusting screw to (95 ATX) 72 in-lbs, then back off 2 and a half turns or (96 and higher ATX) 72 in-lbs, then back off 2 and a quarter turns. While holding the screw in place, tighten the locknut to 35 ft-lbs. That takes care of your kickdown band!
