Dumb People shouldnt work on cars...

I was in central auto parts the other day picking up some brake parts. I could tell that it had been a busy day because the phones would not stop ringing. Anyways a guy was helping me at one station and the next station down a guy was helping a customer over the phone. Then that guy hang up the phone throws his arms in the air and yells "Im Done! This guy just asked me what a fuel pump does!" Everyone just started laughing. And the customer still didnt get it after they hung up. I cant understand that... I have lots of patience with people who dont know anything whatsoever about cars. But I dont know about this case....

Re: Dumb People shouldnt work on cars...

Oh man, I had something like that happen to me today at Pep Boys. I was walkin around and these two kids were lookin over at the intake kits. And this one kid picks up an APC valve breather and asks his friend, "What is this man? A tiny air filter? What's the point of that? It's too small." And his other friend say's, "I don't know man, companies are just stupid I guess." I burst out laughing at them, it was great. As I walked by I noticed this huge "H" emblem hanging off his keychain. The DMV's should make it a requirement for everyone to know the layout of an engine before they get their license. Seriously, I can't even stand using things unless I know how they work, and what things are that are on it.

Re: Dumb People shouldnt work on cars...

I had a customer bring back some pads and a rotor last week. The rotor was sheered in half. He said he just put it on two days ago. I looked at the pads and noticed that one of the backing plates was worn down, looked at the pad on the other side, and noticed a circular impression made by the caliper piston. I can't figure out how he managed to put them on backwards.

Also last week...

A lady comes in and asks about some jumper cables. She has some cheap 10ga. cables in her hands. She asks me what the difference between the ticker and thinner cables is. I explain, and she starts going to get some better ones, but then starts thinking cheap and picks up the junk again. A couple hours later she brings the cables back. They are severely melted. She can't figure out what went wrong, and now she has no power in the interior of the car.

Customer calls and says that he is trying to jack up his car. He says that the jack is going up but the car is not.

Is there a new hump in your floor pan?

You would be truely amazed, and perhaps horrified at the lack of basic
understanding/knowledge that many people walking into a parts store possess. They expect to get the right part(s) for their vehicle, but many have little to no information about it. Year, 4 or 6 cylinder, rear disc or drum, etc. I think the best though was a guy who wanted pads for his truck. I ask him what kind of truck. He says "it's a brown one". Thats all he knew...

I got everybody beat.

This woman called On Star because her keyless entry wouldn't work. So they send a guy out there who shows her that the keys in her purse work just as well.

True story.

they create negative crankcase pressure, allowing a engine builder to use low tension rings, gas ported rings, and many other friction saving devices which are normally busy containing oil

It's not all the idiot customers either. I had a list of what I needed for gaskets etc to change the head on my grand am. It was even a printout from advance auto parts. When my wife went in to get the parts, the store manager tried to talk her out of buying both sets of cam carrier gaskets. It even said on the printout that it was a dohc motor.
