DOT 3 or 5.1 ?

Hello All,

I own a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis.
I want to refresh the brake fluid.
The owners manual warns to use only DOT 3.
But a salesman at my local carparts-shop says that there is no objection to use DOT 5.1

What is your opinion?

Thanks in advance,

Vacht
