Bullitt Rematch

Ok what's it gonna be ?

The Mustang GT '05 (300hp)

vs.

The Dodge Charger R/T (340hp)

Which do you choose as the overall package?

If I had kids and a wife, I guess the Charger would be the only logical choice. It seems like a nice all arounder with a great engine and good suspension, along with pretty good interior space. It's automatic only, though.

If I was buying one of the choices as my second car, or I didn't have to haul more than one person around with me, the Mustang, hands down. I got the chance to drive several of them when I was a salesman at a Ford/VW dealer. That car is an absolute BLAST. Super sweet V8, slick five speed, and very nice handling. It even has a decent interior. Even if someone didn't like the retro looks, I bet they would be hard pressed not to fall in love with the car after driving it. Heck, even the new V6s are fun to drive. Especially with a manual trans.

As far as hard numbers are concerned, the GT edges out the Dodge in about every catagory- at least until the SRT8 version comes out.

I'd be happy to find either one of them in my driveway, though.

Re: Bullitt Rematch

Sup Mclaren...I got a 300zx also...holy body roll Batman!!! Hehehe. Anyways...I thought about putting it against the SRT8 but it's not out yet, not fully tested, and it would be unfair to compare it since it's got 425hp vs. the 300hp of the GT. I think the SRT8's supposed to get to 60 in 5.0 seconds though

Re: Bullitt Rematch

GT 100%, the charger is terrible. I don't like the fact that it has 4 doors. The Charger is also only automatic. It really has nothing in common with a sports car other than power. I mean the mustang is a pony car but its about as close to a sports car as you are going to get without being one. The Charger is closer is relation to a Crown Victoria than a mustang. If they come out with a better charger with 2 doors and a manual transmission I would start to like it a lot more.

And then it will be second best then when it's put up against the GT-500.

The Mustang gets it hands down though. This isn't even a contest here.

Anyway, the...what is this thing called? A Charger? No, a Charger was a two door coupe from the '60's. This thing is...a sin. I thought things couldn't get worse with the new GTO, Dodge proved me wrong there, BIG TIME!

I'll take the Mustang GT any day. The Charger doesn't really impress me at all. I think it lands somewhere between the GTO and the T-Bird for worst retro remake...

Dodge Challenger due out around '08. We'll make the comparison then.

And the Charger in the movie was a 2-door. The new Charger has nothing in common with the old one except for the name. Don't make dumb comparisons.

It's not a dumb comparo...both are revitalizations (however perverse they maybe) of former cars. Both have V8's and are RWD and are roughly in the same range of money. Only 40 hp separates them and about 300 lbs.

And if you think it's a dumb comparo...DONT CLICK ON IT!

I would have to agree with you both. The Charger dominates in its class. Too bad the cars in its class are cars like the Ford 500 and the Chevy Malibu. I am very irritated with Chrysler right now. The Charger was never offered with four doors, not even in the 80s. Now they have made it a family sedan to replace the boring and responsible Intrepid. Boring people didn't buy Chargers nor were they trying to be responsible. Then they will only equip it with an automatic, which really pisses me off. They want to revive namesakes like the Hemi and the Charger but they are mucking it all up with low compression, automatic transmissions, and four fucking doors.

I haven't heard anything about that!?!?! Do you know of any websites with info on this I can read? Anyhow, if that's true then Chrysler had better pull their heads out of Mercedes ass and get a manual transmission and it had better be a coupe. They had better not taint another good name.

My dad and I have had that argument over and over. He claims that people don't want coupes and they would rather have automatics. I think that is bullshit. Sure, the family man wants room and an auto because he wants a family sedan. He isn't going to buy a sports car. I mean how do you explain the success of the Mustang if nobody is buying coupes? All Chrysler needs to do is offer the car in some different configurations like Ford does. Have a convertible, have an automatic available, but also have the manual. They also need to have aftermarket support. Lastly, they need to make it look something like this Cuda concept drawing:

In the end if I had to pick one I would have to pick the Mustang. I wasn’t a big fan of the last generation’s looks but Ford has done a great job of mixing the old with the new and I think it looks great. The Charger however, doesn’t. I don’t like how it looks, I don’t like big cars, and I don’t care for automatics.

Re: Bullitt Rematch

I would buy that concept Cuda in a heartbeat if it was competively priced where the GT Mustang is.

I love the Hemi and Cuda

i think people have been a little too hard on the GTO. give it the car a break. 400hp, 0-60 in 4.8s, 6sp manual, semi-posh interior and better than decent handling for a car that's not much under 2tons. i know it's not much to look at as far the exterior goes, but those are impressive numbers.
of course, i'd take the mustang any day since i've fallen in love with the new mustangs. 300hp for $25k and the perfect blend of retro/modern styling.
i know the thread is "bullitt rematch", but if you really want to have a good car argument, talk about the mustang GT and the GTO.

as far as the charger goes, i agree with the comments already made. i see the charger as the 300C's angry, underpriviledged, twin-brother. way can't dodge make a modern muscle-car that doesn't double as a family hauler?
