Oil warning Light

My '96 Bonny's oil warning light stays on for a short period after a cold start. It always happened after I started changing my own oil instead of the dealership so I think they reset it somehow. How do I reset the warning light?

Re: Oil warning Light

There is really no way to reset it. As long as it goes off shortly after the car starts don't worry about it. I do have couple of questions though, what grade of oil are you using? Did you change from a light weight to a heavier weight oil than the shop was using?

I just use the recommended weight. 5W 30 I think.

Re: Oil warning Light

If the problem continues try changing the oil pressure sending unit located above the oil filter. It may be going bad.

As engines wear it takes a little while longer for the pressure to build up to the point where the light goes out. If it fails to go out then you may need a new oil pump but that should be a long way off.

Good Luck!
