My 96 town and country died today on the road. It just stalled. It will restart but will intermittently stall. It's happenned about 3 times now. I checked the code because the engine service light came on, and it gave me a code 54, which is, 'ignition synchronization unit'. What needs to be done to correct this problem, what is the problem and what does it mean. I am mainly concerned beacause my family does alot of around town driving and I don't want to worry about them stranded in the middle of traffic. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 96 3.8 code 54 ign synchronization unit code
Hi we have just had the same problem on a 1996 grand caravan the code 54 is for the cam positioning sensor it can be found by the thermostat housing on the left side as you look at the engine we changed it and had no problems since. we had to buy it from the dealer as they don't seem to carry it at the other part stores took 15 mins to replace. hope this helps you

Thanks a ton! That was it. I looked at the camshaft sensor and sure enough the pigtail had been rubbing aginst the serpentine belt which exposed the wiring. Bingo! 1 bolt and a $38.00 part beats a dealer diagnostic and repair fee! BTW is it a simple plug it in and it works or is there any computer calibration required? Thanks again!
