Air Conditioning Re-charge

Hello,

I have been reading (here and other places) about how easy it is to recharge the air condition systems in these Blazers…

My air conditioning works, but the air is definitely not as cold as it used to be, and the compressor cycles on and off every few seconds, so I’m assuming it needs a recharge. The problem is I can’t find anyone here that sells the recharge kits!!! I have tried chain stores like Canadian Tire and NAPA as well as the local independent auto parts stores, and nobody sells this stuff.

I have been give a million different stories too; from that it’s against the law to sell it in this Province and/or Country, to there’s a world shortage and we just can’t get anymore in stock for this year…

Does anybody here know the truth? Why can’t I find a recharge kit anywhere?

If it matters, it’s a 1996 Blazer LS 4x4, and I’m on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

Thanks,

Z

Re: Air Conditioning Re-charge

You can't buy them in Canada, only in the states.

You will have to go to a shop and have them top it up.

Oh, and BTW, don't have them convince you to completely service the AC system, tell them you just want the AC refrigerant topped up.

I have a similar situation with my 95 Jeep G.C. The shop told me that it would cost about $400 to have the system checked for leaks and then recharged. Does this sound reasonable? What should it cost to just have the AC coolant topped up? Thx.
(ps I live in Canada too)

No, that is a ripoff.

Tell them you ONLY want a top off and that is it.

You see, I knew they were going to pull that crap. They are just trying to scam you.

Try a mail-order parts house like www.autobarn.com

You should be able to find someone able to ship across the border.

I'm not too sure about being able to have a service shop just top off the refrigerant. Any reputable shop will want to charge for leak test/inspection services.
3 years ago I paid $120.00 for this service , plus $5.00 for a can of refrigerant. Since then, I've purchased a hose kit for $15.00 to do it myself. The leak detector is only $10.00, and the refrigerant is about the same for 12 oz.
Good luck.

I guess that settles it... no DIY repair for me. $400 is a lot of dough for something I could have spent about $50 to do myself. Held hostage by government regulations once again.
