00 ffv -- intermittent surge and only when hot

I have a 2000 Taurus FFV model SES which has been having an intermittent surge problem. The check engine light illuminates. Pulled the code, only one shows -- P1237 secondary fuel pump circuit failure. This problem only occurs when the weather is extremely warm. Happened last year during the summer months, went away during the winter, only to return again this spring when the weather turned hot again. MIL indicator will reset itself sometimes, if the fault does not occur again within the reset parameters. Yesterday the problem returned with a vengence, car started surging so badly I had to pull over. I turned off the car, restarted it after a few seconds and drove off with absolutely no problems. Today drove it all day with absolutely no problems. Problem definitely seems electrical to me. Ideas??

Filter was replaced last fall, so I don't suspect the filter. I am in the process of trying to verify the integrity of all the electrical connections related to fuel pump operation. I am starting to wonder if it could be the fuel pump itself. I am a relatively new Taurus owner so I am still learning the 'quirks' of this vehicle. I really don't want to pull the fuel pump unless I am absolutely positive that it is the problem. The car drives perfectly fine most of the time, although I frequently get the check engine light due to the P1237 code only. The code can be reset and will not return for several days sometimes. Luckily I have my own code scanner and am able to reset myself. I have searched extensively for information on the code 1237 and what sets it but have been able to find out very little about it. Anyone else out there who has had this code or knows what its about?
