91 civic dies while driving

hello all,

i've searched your forums but can't seem to find an answer to my question. hopefully you can help.

yesterday i was driving home and without warning, my engine turned off. the accelerator pedal did nothing when i tried to keep the engine from dying. i pulled over and tried to turn the car over to see what would happen. the thing will turn over all day long but won't start, won't really even try to start.

here's what i've done:

1. voltage from battery seems fine. horn works, radio work, the car will turn over.

2. the timing belt is brand new, alternator is new, distributor, cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires have all be replaced within the past three months.

3. fuel filter is new. replaced it this morning, but it didn't solve my problem.

4. main relay seems to work just fine. i connected it to a 12VDC power supply and checked both relay. voltages from harness read fine. i jumpered the two connectors that turns the fuel pump on, and i believe i heard it turn on.

i'm totally stumped as to what would cause this problem. the only thing i haven't checked is if the spark plugs are indeed sparking. is there an easy way to do that? i suppose i could hold the spark plug to something grounded and watch for spark, right? what really confuses me is that the thing just died while driving with no warning whatsoever.

anyway, if anyone can help me i would be very grateful. thanks!

That happened to me... turned over a lot, but no start. It was the distributor itself. GL

I would check the connections on the coil and the ignition module, sometimes they'll come loose from vibration.

Re: Re: 91 civic dies while driving

in addition to the dizzy (coil and ignitor are excellent suggestions)...check for lack of spark

have you checked your ignition? probably not the problem however i have seen a freaky instance where something similiar happened and it was the ignition.

have you checked the ecu for error codes?

check the o2 sensor.

fianlly, last night we got to drive 80 mi away to do emergency road side service for a freind. he had spark and fuel. turned out to be his MAP sensor

it's hard to diagnois a car not in front of you...hopefully that gives you some leads to check out. let us know what you find out and we'll take it from there

figured it out

it turns out that the rotor's set screw had come loose so that the rotor wasn't spinning, thus, no spark.

well, at least i have a new fuel filter.

thanks for all your help guys!
