Volume Problem w/ JVC unit 1998 sunfire
ok when my sisters radio was first installed the volume was like really loud at 15, then one day it got messed up and you have to have it at 20 to be really loud, then it was just messed up again and had to be put at 30 to be really loud. so i took the unit out and found 2 broken wires... a blue one and an orange one(dimmer) so i reconnected them. and now her red lights on the gauge cluster work and here radio is a bit louder.
but does anyone know how i can get it to be where it first was when it was loud at 15. i didn't see anymore messed up wires. nor any nobs on the back of the unit. thanks, Josh |

Here's what I would do, in order:
1. Make COMPLETELY sure there are no messed up wires, they all have excellent connections, and there are no blown fuses. 2. If you've already done that and it's still the same, ground it straight to the kick panel and make sure you're getting enough power from the power wire. I cannot tell you what wire code you have because I don't own a 98 Sunfire with a JVC head unit, but the power wire and the ground should either be self explainatory or it should have a chart on the head unit somewhere (common sense and alittle trial and error come in here). Some tips: To find the power wire, block out the ones that are obviously not it; i.e. blue, green, etc. Then take the ones like orange, yellow and red and use a tester with a small lightbulb inside of it that lights up with you connect one end to the wire and another just push against metal on the body somewhere to ground it. It's easy to find the ground, if the stereo doesn't come on it's not the right one. It is most likely a connection somewhere, that would be my best guess if the head unit's not bad. 3. Your head unit is bad, or POSSIBLY your speakers, you could have blown them or something. But I doubt you blew them.

Re: Volume Problem w/ JVC unit 1998 sunfire
and if its not with the internal transistor portion or if not found in the actual hook up with the new harness. try looking at possibilities of the actual factory wiring unless which i doubt the wires were completely replaced. even if you arent getting background noises from the engine or something. your alternator could have blown a diode. which in a lot of cases we send surges throughout various electrical devices. check the alternator if you get a new head unit and it still does that.
