98 Trooper ocassionally slips

Every once in a while after backing out and then going into drive or just starting in drive the transmission gives a little slip then catches and is fine for the rest of the time. it doesn't happen every day and not all the time but enough were the wife is alittle perturbed about it. have replace the differential fluid and the filter and transmission fluid but it still happens.

Amigo,

Saw that FAQ but with the lack of any fault codes and it only happening on occasion was not sure that was an appropriate solution. if it was the contacts in the selctor would it not do it all the time and also whenever i change the selector?

No help here, but I do have a similar problem. When starting, usually on hill, the transmission slips or almost shutters just slightly and then kicks into gear. Doesn't do it all the time, only occasionally. Taking it to the shop soon so i'll see what they say. Any more comments would be helpful.

Talked with the transmission shop this afternoon and he didn't really offer me any help. He says the fluid looks burnt, which is a sure sign there is a problem in there. Told me I have two options: drive it and hope it works for many more miles or get it rebuild for around $1,800. Not sure if this guy is taking me for a ride or not. He said the transmission doesn't seem to be acting up to him, so he doesn't even have an idea of what is wrong. I am worried I spend $1,800 on a rebuild and it ends up being the rear end or a u-joint.

I guess I'll replace the u-joint first. Always the cheapest fix first and keep your fingers crossed!

jesse, thanks for the update. Keep me posted. Traveling next week (w/ the trooper) and then will probably try Amigo's suggestion about the range selector when we get back.

Don't you hate when it doesn't act up for the mechanic?

have you guys checked the fluid level! You can find how in the manual that has been posted here, just do it with the engine running. I can email you the procedure if needed!
